The 2019 Fourth Edition of Best Practice for Expressing, Storing and Handling Human Milk in Hospitals, Homes, and Child Care Settings is now available.

HMBANA publishes three guides that contribute to milk banking operations. They are used by member milk banks, client hospitals, public health institutions, and milk banking institutions globally.

These publications form the backbone of the accreditation process, which is key to ensuring an ethically sourced, equitably distributed, and clinically sound supply of pasteurized donor human milk. When a nonprofit milk bank is a HMBANA member, they are guided by the standards and ethics set forth in these publications.

Bulk purchases of ten or more copies of Best Practice include a $25 discount per publication. Bulk purchases of ten or more copies of  the Guidelines include a $20 discount per publication. Additional shipping charges apply in those instances.

Guidelines for the Establishment and Operation of a Donor Human Milk Bank

© HMBANA. 10th Edition 2018

HMBANA Guidelines provide evidence-based direction to support the screening, handling, and distribution of a safe, optimal protocol by its member milk banks. They are not designed for use outside of member milk banks. The Guidelines address three layers of recipient protection from disease transmission. First, donors are screened for medical and lifestyle risk factors, and serum is screened for HIV, HTLV, syphilis, and Hepatitis B and C. Then, milk is pasteurized, a process that kills HIV and cytomegalovirus as well as other viruses and bacteria. Lastly, no milk is dispensed after pasteurization until a culture is negative for bacteriological growth.

Lactation Support for the Bereaved Mother, A Toolkit: Information for Healthcare Providers

© HMBANA. 2012

This toolkit provides evidence-based information to enable healthcare providers to effectively address lactation with bereaved mothers. It is important to be sensitive to their loss as well as to educate mothers about their options and to support them in their decisions. Bereaved mothers need space to grieve and talk about their emotions surrounding their loss. Each bereaved mother’s need are different. Some bereaved mothers may want nothing to do with their milk after their baby dies whereas others want to continue to express their milk and eventually donate it to a HMBANA member milk bank. Regardless of what a mother decides, it is important to respect and support every woman’s decision. The toolkit includes information about expressing and donating milk, as well as stopping milk production after loss.
